Yesterday we had our final ultrasound. Well, it was the last ultrasound needed unless something comes up and we need to do another one. This time, though, I decided to get the 3D type with Congenital Anomaly Scan (CAS).
We were a bit late in getting the CAS. Actually, our doctor didn’t feel the need to have the test at all. I was also contemplating on it. For one, it was really too late at 30 weeks. There’s a chance that we won’t be able to see or measure Light clearly. My mommy friend, Char, also made a good point. She said that if ever you did see something like a deformity, there’s really nothing you can do about it. It’s not like you’re going to get an abortion, right? But for me, it was just so I’d know and be assured that all is well with baby Light.
Getting a 3D/4D ultrasound is actually a luxury. It’s not something you MUST do during pregnancy, but it’s something really COOL to get so you can have a clearer picture of your baby. I enjoyed our 3D ultrasound. Light was doing these really funny things, and it kind of made me have a glimpse of the future with my baby. It was just amazing seeing her move. She was sucking her thumb and playing with the cord. She was smiling and maybe making fun of us while we take a look at her. I have a feeling she’ll be one naughty baby girl! 😀
I did a bit of research before we (by we, I meant I) decided which type of ultrasound to get. I wanted to see what Light looks like inside. I wanted to have souvenirs of the images, too. So a 3D ultrasound was the good choice for me.
Thinking about it now, though, I think the 4D would have been a better choice. Since light kept moving around and kept touching her face with her hands, the doctor had a hard time taking a clear image of her. She was also pressing her face against the placenta. The cord was floating around her face too. We couldn’t get a clear image of her. The whole time though, we did get to see her clearly for a few seconds. So I think a video would’ve been better. At least you get to play it and see it again.
Most importantly, I wanted to be sure that everything checks out okay with her, that all her organs are developing well, and there’s no deformities, her toes and fingers are complete, etc. CAS was the ideal test.
CAS is a more detailed “scanning” of your baby.
Most clinics will have packages of 3D and 4D ultrasound with fetal biometry. But fetal biometry is not as detailed as CAS. I asked around and found out that with CAS, you’ll have a much detailed fetal biometry. I really wanted to have the CAS even if I were 10 weeks too late. I figured since I’m going to have Light checked, I better have her checked thoroughly.
CAS is usually done at around 18-20 weeks.
It really came down to the price when choosing which clinic to go to. At first I was gearing towards In My Womb. But they don’t have the 3D + CAS packages. It ended up more expensive if I get a 3D package and their CAS. Their packages did include more print outs. We also checked Face2Face. But they weren’t so accommodating. I felt like they didn’t care if I do the ultrasound with them or not. “Here’s the price list, take it or leave it!”
Lastly, I checked MdCare. I liked MdCare right away. They have the package that I want (3D+CAS). There were just a couple of print outs, though. The girl in their Fisher Mall clinic was really nice and accommodating. She and the doctor were really great to work with. They made me feel comfortable. The room where we had the ultrasound was spacious.
The doctor was very patient in doing the CAS even though it was hard at 30 weeks. She was also determined to get a good picture of Light despite the difficulties. When they couldn’t get a clear image of Light, the doctor suggested I walk around some more and come back to try again. We were there for two and a half hours I think!
I’m just happy that everything is fine with Light. She is in the right position (cephalic “mode”), meaning her head is at the bottom part of my tummy. Although her position can still change. She is one healthy baby! 🙂

Hi Mommy, i tried to ask with their fishermall branch, the one who answered my call advised me that the ideal weeks to do CAS is 27 – 31 weeks? im quite confused..

Hi Mommy Gemm! When I had my CAS at 30 weeks, the OB doing my ultrasound had a hard time taking pictures already because there was not enough space. I also read somewhere before that the best time is at 20 weeks I think? So maybe you can have your CAS somewhere in the middle of 20-27 weeks? 🙂 Or ask your OB too what she thinks.
